Luigi Amati, CEO and co-founder, META Group

Case studies: top performing investments and their management teams

Luigi Amati has twenty years of experience in Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship.  Since 1993 he is the CEO (and co-founder) of META Group. Between 1987 and 1993 he has worked both in Italy (Rome - La Sapienza) and the UK (Imperial College) on computational mechanics research activities. Most recent professional experience is on creation and management of Seed funds and mentoring of young Knowledge Intensive companies. He has worked and studied in different countries such as Italy, England, Tunisia, Holland, Argentina, Chile, Spain and Russia. Luigi Amati holds an Engineering Master degree Summa cum Laude at the University of Rome and a Master of Science at Imperial College in London. He is a board member of the European Business Angels Network Association, a member of the Venture Capital Committee of the Italian Venture Capital Association, a member of 1generation network and a founder of the Italian Angels for Growth Club in Milan.

Paulo Andrez has a background as serial entrepreneur since his 18 years old, and created several companies in areas like : IT software, training, real estate and industrial resins. In 2000 he participated as entrepreneur (seller) in the IPO of Novabase (the largest IT provider in Portugal that is listed in Euronext, with turnover that exceeds 250 M€), and from then he became Business Angel, helping entrepreneurs to achieve results. In 2006 he founded the Cascais Business Angel Network and in 2007 he was co-founder of FNABA (Portuguese Business Angels Federation). Since then, he has helped to raise the awareness of Business Angel community in Portugal : was chairman of the World Business Angels Leaders Forum (Estoril 2007) that decided to create the World Business Angels Association, participated under FNABA scope in the first Business Angel co-investment fund and was speaker in many events.
In 2007 he helped to found DNA Cascais (www.dnacascais.pt) , one of the most successful Public Entrepreneurship Agencies in Portugal that in 3 years has helped to raise money and support to 100 innovative start ups that were created. Paulo Andrez studied Computer Engineering and holds an MBA (Universidade Nova de Lisboa). At present, he is a business angel in several projects, coordinates DNA Cascais, the EBAN Research Committee and the first Portuguese Post Graduate Program in Tourism Entrepreneurship under ESHTE University.

Developing business angel policy in different national contexts – some important considerations

Sofia Avdeitchikova has a PhD in Entrepreneurship and Venture Finance from Lund University. Her doctoral dissertation focused on informal venture capital investors in Sweden, particularly the heterogeneity of the investment behavior and the geographical aspects of informal venture capital investing. Since 2008 Sofia works as consultant within Business and Industry Analysis at Ramböll in Stockholm, mainly with analyzing and developing institutional conditions for business in Sweden. She is also a post doctoral research fellow in Entrepreneurship and Venture Finance at CIRCLE, Lund University.

EBAN update on market statistics and trends

Brigitte is President of the Board of EBAN and is also the Founder and CEO of Go Beyond Ltd. She is a Business Angel and serves on a number of selection and investment committees. Brigitte is on the Certification Board of CTI Start-Up, the Swiss agency promoting technology and innovation and she Chairs Young Presidents Organization’s global Angel Investing group. Brigitte Baumann has 20 years of  experience in bringing new technologies to market in the US and Europe . She was the CEO and Director of iWORLD Group, a VC backed, global developer of mobile content. She came to iWG from American Express Corporate Services, where she held the position of Senior Vice President and General Manager Internet. There she launched a variety of new internet businesses including online travel (including Expedia.com), e-Procurement, online servicing of cards and online payment. Prior to that, Brigitte spent three years as President for US and Canada of GEMPLUS (now Gemalto), the world’s leader in smart card technology and applications to orchestrate the introduction of smart cards to the US. She moved to GEMPLUS from American Express TRS Inc., where she had spent over six years in different Vice-Presidential/General Manager positions in the UK, France and Switzerland.  She also spent five years with McKinsey & Company Inc. as Senior Engagement Manager, based in New York, Paris and Tokyo.  She began her career in manufacturing and sales with Rohm & Haas, a leading specialty chemicals company. Brigitte holds a B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Tufts University, Boston and an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.  She has been the subject of a Harvard Business School case study. Born and raised in France, Brigitte and her family now live in Zurich.

Mark is one of the Managing Partners of Seraphim Capital. He works in an executive capacity as the funds' Investment Director, and has led all the investments the Fund has made to date. He is an active investor in technology across all sectors and stages serving on numerous boards throughout his venture career.
Prior to Seraphim he was the Investment Director of London Seed Capital and three further venture EIS funds. During this time, Mark built up a portfolio of 18 early stage companies across a wide range of sectors. He initially trained as an equity analyst and fund manager at Williams de Broe and Brewin Dolphin before moving into venture.

Dr. Peter F. Bougdanos, Lecturer at Haaga-Helia - University of Applied Sciences, has over 20 years experience in a wide variety of financial, economic, and geopolitical sectors. Peter serves as a mentor at the European Union sponsored INNOPLAZA program for young student aspiring to be entrepreneurs. Peter was Special Advisor to William E. Simon Sr., the former USA Treasury Secretary under the Presidents Nixon and Ford administrations.  Amongst his numerous mentors, he most admires Kenneth G. Langone, the founder of Home Depot and former Board of Director of the New York Stock Exchange. Peter is also an accredited EU lobbyist and Economist which has promoted green projects and tackled military arms issues at the European Parliament in Brussels.  Peter is multilingual and has worked in over a dozen countries.  Peter is a cross borders mergers & acquisitions and socioeconomics specialist.  Peter has held SEC, NASD and NYSE licenses and registrations. Peter is currently Chairman of the Board of First Line Angel Group Oy and Recepist Oy.  He is also an active member of the board of directors of the Finnish Artificial Intelligence Society and Nordic Koivu Ltd. He is also the founder of First Line Angel Group (FLAG) and has devised a patent pending strategy to achieve serial exits from his current portfolio holding and new startup and mature companies opportunities. Peter is also a founding partner of the first, for-profit, startup incubator - FirstRound Startup Center in Finland.

Alina got a French master degree in electrical engineering in 1981 and started her career with the Swedish group ABB as country sales manager. She then moved to the USA, where she first completed an MBA at Stanford University and then joined a high flyer Silicon Valley player as marketing manager. Back to France after 7 years in the USA, she founded a telecommunication firm, Intercall. The company went public in 1998 and was sold to Tiscali in 2001. She then started a Business Angel career. She has invested between 100 000 € and 700 000 € in 14 different companies (Software, TV production, Internet stores, Music on line, Tourism, offshore telemarketing, telecommunications, luxury). As of now, 2 have been sold with reasonable profit, 3 have been busted, 2 are in real bad shape, 3 are really uncertain, 4 are very promising).

Anthony Clarke is Managing Director of GLE Growth Capital specialising in providing early-stage equity finance for high growth businesses. GLE Growth Capital includes the London Business Angels Network and its sister angel co-investment fund London Seed Capital. Anthony is also Managing Director of the UK’s first Enterprise Capital Fund, the £30 million Seraphim Capital Fund, and of GLE Limited. He is also member of the Executive Committee and Chairman Emeritus of EBAN and Chairman of the British Business Angel Association (BBAA). Anthony also holds a position on the Board of Catalyst (Council for Advancement of Science and Industry for London).

Anthony qualified as a Chartered Secretary in 1977 and as a Chartered Accountant in 1980 whilst with Deloitte Haskins & Sells (now PWC).Thereafter, he worked on a full time basis as a Finance Director and Chief Executive of a number of small and medium sized enterprises and since 1995 he has been a business angel investor / non-executive director of many early stage businesses prior to joining the GLE Group in 2002.

Philippe Gluntz, a French Citizen, is graduated from Ivy League “Ecole Polytechnique” and “Ecole des Ponts et Chaussées”. He also graduated from “ l’Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Paris” in Economics and holds a PhD in Management from Vanderbilt University ( USA ).
Philippe Gluntz spent most of his career as C.O.O. then C.E.O. of computer services companies, singularly of GSI, European leader in IT and payroll outsourcing, that he started up with close friends in the mid seventies, and eventually sold in 1995 to ADP Employer Services, for which he served as C.E.O. for Europe and Corporate Vice-President until 2002, when he was appointed non executive Chairman , and started to invest as a Business Angel in several start-ups in the IT and Telecom sectors.
He has also been in charge of one the largest mergers of the 80’s, between Alcatel-CIT (France) and I.T.T. Telecom (USA), leading to the creation of the current Alcatel Group (13 Billion USD and 120000 employees at that time), of which he has been the C.O.O. from 1986 to 1991.
Philippe Gluntz is now Chairman of France Angels, the French Association of Business Angels, as well as Paris Business Angels,  Board Member of several IT companies, and is heavily involved in the Venture Capital market, on top of his academic teaching. He is also a Director of “l’Institut de l’ Entreprise”, a private “Think Tank”, sponsored by most of the Global Companies Headquartered in France.

Tiphaine Hue is graduated from the University Paris X – Nanterre (DESS de Droit du Commerce International) and the American University – Washington DC (LLM of International Legal Studies).

She joined last year the law firm Simon Associés in order to co-manage the Corporate Department in Paris (www.simonassocies.com).

Over the last 10 years, Tiphaine Hue has assisted her clients in Private Equity and M&A transactions. In this respect, she has assisted entrepreneurs, VC’s and business angels in various deals. Hannu Jungman is manager at Veraventure, a goverment backed early stage venture capital company. Before joining Veraventure he has worked several years with startups, university spin-offs and investors. He started his professional career at Tampere University of Technology (TUT) where he worked as teacher and researcher of growth venturing.
Later on he was managing TUT's spin-off activities at Tamlink Ltd and founded a management consulting company Prodia Ltd. At Veraventure, Mr. Jungman is responsible for investments in mobile and web companies and managing business angel network InvestorExtra. He has a master's degree from Tampere University of Technology, Department of Industrial Engineering and Management.

Jennifer Naylor’s diverse roles have included Director of Electronic Communications for Cablevision Systems Corporation - one of the nation’s largest telecommunications and media companies, Executive Director of Health Insurance For All - a health policy reform start-up, and Director of Operations for Middle East Capital Group - a Beirut-based venture capital group. As a New Media Consultant, she developed major initiatives for Madison Square Garden, New York University, The M&A Advisor and Ateco USA. Most recently, she has provided strategic leadership in executive roles at several high-tech start-ups including HireMe.tv. As a managing director of Golden Seeds, Jennifer offers expertise in web-based technologies, and is mentoring several young women entrepreneurs in strategy, sales and business development.
A two-time Fulbright scholar to Egypt, Jennifer earned a PhD from New York University. She has an undergraduate degree from Colby College, Waterville, Me. where she completed a double major graduating cum laude with distinction and won a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship for research abroad. She has working knowledge of French and Italian and speaks the Egyptian dialect of Arabic.

John Nogrady is Director of Business Development for Microsoft’s Emerging Business Team. John has over 20 years of experience in the technology sector and started his career at Digital Equipment Corporation, as a software engineer working on VMS operating system. Throughout his career, John has been involved in founding and building several startups. His positions have included Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Engineering at PrizePoint Entertainment, which was acquired by Uproar in 1999. John was Director of Engineering at PointCast, where he was responsible for building out the data center and distribution servers for the PointCast network including the management of the Development and Information System teams. Prior to that, he held the position of Senior Software Architect at BluePoint Technologies, which was acquired by Adobe Systems, where John held the position of Manager of Pacific Rim Display Products. Just before joining Microsoft in 2003, John was director of business technology at WebMethods, where his responsibilities included the technical relationship management of SAP AG. John serves as an advisory to several early stage technology companies and is an active advisory board member for the University of California Davis Office of Research. John is a graduate of Virginia Tech University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in computer science.

Hans Otterling has a background as a serial entrepreneur with substantial experience in establishing and developing successful companies in challenging international markets. In 1996 Hans Otterling founded StreamServe Inc. which today is one of the largest privately held software companies in Europe. In 1988 he founded Waymaker (sold to Cision), which became the major distributor of financial information for companies listed on the Nordic stock markets. Mr. Otterling studied at the Stockholm School of Economics and Business Administration and was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Massachusetts, where he earned his M.B.A. He is also the recipient of the Tekn., Dr. Marcus Wallenberg's Minnesfond Scholarship.

Having started his career as a consultant in the management of innovation, he joined later INSEAD (Fontainebleau) He was successively: Professor in the fields of Managerial Economics and Decision Making; Associate Dean for Executive Education (1972-1981); Dean of INSEAD (1981-1993). He is, since 1994, Vice-Chairman of the Board of INSEAD. For four years (1994-1997) he became Vice-President of EFMD (European Foundation for Management Development) in Brussels. Deniz Sezgin born in 1968 Ankara-Turkey. After her graduation from college, from 1990 to 2006 she worked for Kocbank, Denizbank, HİFAŞ Hannover Fairs-İnterpro and Umut Danismanlik, in the department of consumer banking, private banking, private investment consulting and organisational consulting. She works as the Administrative Officer at METUTECH-BAN (Association for Business Angels Network established by METUTECH) which was founded for bringing together technology investors as an association and it aims to introduce the technology-based entrepreneurs with the investor business angels who are members of the network.

Ricard is one of the founding partners of Active Venture Partners since its inception in 2002. He is elemental in solving structural challenges, ensuring solid organisational stantards and assisting in the financial planning for our portfolio companies. He is currently on the board of European Telemedicine Clinic, Golden Gekko and Companía General de Inversiones.

Prior to Active Venture Partners, in 1996, Ricard started his career within the fixed income markets for Credit Suisse in London and New York. He was covering all the main Central Banks globally as clients and later focused on the Scandinavian markets. In 1998, he was part of setting up the Merrill Lynch office in Barcelona heading the active portfolio management department and also involved in the fundraising of private equity funds from Spain and the US. In 2001 he joined the UBS Barcelona office as an Associate Director until he left to set up Active Venture Partners in 2002.

Ricard was born in Sweden and has lived and worked in Sweden, England, United States, France, Gibraltar and Spain. He graduated from the European Business School London in 1995.

Dušan Stojanović is a full-time business Angel in France, Sweden and Croatia. A European with a Swedish passport, Dušan worked between 1995 - 2005 primarily at GE Capital and Monabanq.com Internet Bank (France) within e-payments/e-commerce and his own ventures before becoming a business angel in 2005. Dušan has studied at Gothenburg School of Economics, Sweden. He then went on with GE training by finalising the GE FMP (Financial Management Programme) 2 year programme. He speaks 6 languages (French, English, Swedish, Serbo-Croat, German and Czech) and recently started to learn Mandarin. He is today one of the rare full-time cross-border business angels in Europe with 8 investments in 3 countries (France, Sweden and Croatia) and board member of Paris Angels Capital, a business angel fund. About to kick off TGV – True Global Ventures, a fund for serial entrepreneurs and serials angels as investors from 11 different countries. Results: Solid track record as a business angel with 2 full exits and 2 partial exits out of 8 investments.

Leila Swärd Ramberg, partner and co-founder of Theia Investment AB, has a background in business law and as strategic purchasing manager at Ericsson. She has also had start-ups within trade and real estate and has been running her own investment business for a number of years. Leila has several board assignments; one of which is listed on the Swedish stock market; HiQ International , a mid size company GP Lastbilsbolaget AB and a number of entrepreneurial companies. Her background is a BSc in law from Uppsala University.

Fredrik has completed a number of mergers and acquisitions as well as negotiated several sell-offs and capitalizations of companies. He became the first external investor/owner and Board member of EPiServer AB in 2000. EPiServer AB was awarded with SVCAs Award for best Capital Acquisition in the year 2007.

Session 1: Preparing for exits

Daniel Wild is founder and CEO of Tiburon Partners AG, an Internet and mobile seed venture capital and founder and managing director of Tiburon Unternehmensaufbau GmbH, a private seed fund and holding company, currently invested in 40 companies, the majority of which are in the technology sector. Daniel allowed twelve successful exits since 2004 including Xing , Studivz, Lokalisten and others including Lifebond and Hometown Commercial Capital. He is also founder and executive director of Getmobile AG and Getmobile-Europe PLC, an E-Commerce Company selling mobile phones with contracts in Germany, with an approximate revenue of € 100 m in 2008. Daniel Wild has a Masters Degree in Business Administration (Diplomkaufmann), from the University of Trier, Germany and an MBA from East Carolina University.
